YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK COLLABORATIONS

The Thermal Biology Institute strives to strengthen partnerships
with Yellowstone National Park.

Current Projects include:

Electronic Field Trip
Hot Colors - Windows into Hidden Worlds
Premiered September 8, 2004

TBI sponsored the development of an electronic field trip with the YNP Division of Interpretation. TBI worked with the Formal Education Division and Earthtalk Studios to develop an interactive field trip about Yellowstone's fascinating microbiology, where extreme environments are the norm: www.windowsintowonderland.org

ParKids

ParKids is a program sponsored by Yellowstone's Formal Education Division for elementary age children living in the Yellowstone gateway communities of Mammoth, Gardiner, Corwin Springs, Emigrant, and Cooke City. TBI co-sponsors and actively participates in these annual programs.

Camp Wildness

TBI's Ward and McDermott research labs worked with the Yellowstone Formal Education Division to create and implement a hands-on research experience for 9-12 grade students from Montana and Idaho schools during the summer through the NPS Camp Wildness program. Two groups of 10 students spent time in Yellowstone and in MSU laboratories assisting with hypothesis-driven original research analyzing hot spring microbial mats by extracting DNA and performing PCR amplification and DGGE gels.

Low-impact Research Brochure
TBI worked with the Yellowstone Center for Resources to produce a brochure that highlights the importance of conducting low impact research and outlines ideas for putting the practice to work in the field: Performing Environmentally Sensitive Field Research in Yellowstone
