High output geothermal vent colonized by the moss Fontinalis.

The 60 sec. video excerpt showing the ROV sampling arm inserted into the vent opening while collecting water for chemical and solid phase analysis. Occasional large gas bubbles can be seen releasing from the left side of the vent opening, and
the constant beige-colored cloudy material in the vent emission was determined by SEM-EDAX to be comprised primarily
of an alumino silicate. For scale, the diameter of the sampling arm (shown with strips of black tape) is 2.5 cm. Video provided by Eastern Oceanics LLC. For improved viewing, video screen text (date, time, elapsed time, etc.) has been masked.
